Study Manager - Block Caving

Newcrest Mining Limited, a global mining company and Australia’s largest gold producer has recently expanded its footprint into British Columbia as the operator of a Joint Venture company, Newcrest Red Chris Mining Limited.  At our Red Chris open pit mine operation we are recruiting a Study Manager to join the Project Delivery team. Red Chris is located 80 km south of Dease Lake, BC, on the traditional territory of the Tahltan.  Qualified applicants from the local communities are encouraged to apply.


Reporting to the Head of Strategic Studies, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Guide cross-functional and cross-organisational teams for the successful delivery of Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility study phases of the Red Chris Block Cave Project including underground mine design, infrastructure and materials handling, processing plant, organization development, people, and tailings dam upgrades
  • Deliver the studies on time, within budget, and as per technical specification
  • Present and report as required to the project Steering Committee
  • Provide safety leadership to the project with a strong focus on process safety and culture
  • Deliver effective, ongoing, site-based stakeholder engagement
  • Facilitate cooperation and alignment through strong relationship management between Red Chris Operations personnel, Project Delivery, Technology, and Technical Services teams
  • Challenge assumptions and foster innovative thinking

Qualifications and Experience

  • 20+ years of experience in the mining industry, with 10+ years in advanced project management
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering field with Professional Engineering designation
  • Successfully lead/managed underground mining feasibility study (>$1B CDN)
  • Previous work with major capital projects (+$100M CDN) in an operational environment (brownfields)
  • Experience working in Northern climates is required, Canadian operations preferred
  • Experience building and managing multidisciplinary teams
  • Direct experience with underground mine design and block cave experience an asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) upwards (to General Manager, Head of Studies, executive level) and to Operational and Technical levels
  • Demonstrated ability to manage work in a brown field environment, including ability to establish strong working relationships between operations and study team
