We offer several designated marshalling points within BC including Nanaimo, Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops, Williams Lake, Prince George, Smithers, and Calgary AB.

We are seeking an Engineering Lead to join our Red Chris team working on our Block Cave project. This indiviudal is accountable for providing leadership and overseeing discipline engineers (e.g.: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil/Structural, IT/OT) while driving behaviours, standards and frameworks to align with the Newcrest Red Chris culture and values. The Engineering Lead is responsible for facilitating cross departmental interface and will act as the point of contact to related discipline activities across surface and underground activities on the Project to ensure a seamless transition of data and experience from existing Operations to the Block Cave Project.

This role will be based out of the Vancouver office with occasional remote work as necessary. 

Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Study Manager, duties will include but are not limited too:

Technical

Demonstrates technical and conceptual excellence in anticipating problems and supports the team and plans to deliver on agreed goals:

  • Drives continuous improvement with a focus on high technical standards to drive value and mitigate risk while providing technical excellence and direction; sound engineering knowledge and problem-solving skills to all projects
  • Demonstrates an applied understanding of related processes
  • Oversees, reviews, and monitors related activities adhering to schedules, addresses technical challenges that may be experienced during implementation
  • Ensures that all reports are completed accurately, effective knowledge is provided, and correct data management
  • Ensures designs are in place to support the work
  • Assists with designated studies with specific focus on integration of engineering disciplines
  • Ensure the establishment and application of standards for application on the Project
  • Ensure the establishment and maintain effective guidelines for the development of the Block Cave Project
  • Assist by providing technical audits/reviews and advice as required
  • Accountable for keeping abreast of both external and internal developments in Project Engineering and underground mining fields in general

  • Ensures work is conducted using the appropriate risk assessment and risk management strategy in accordance with safety standards, frameworks and that behaviours are aligned to a culture of minimizing employee risk and harm

  • Ensures zero tolerance for non-compliance
  • Participates in safety initiatives
  • Stays abreast of emerging safety standards and ensuring alignment with advancements in the industry
  • Ensures all partners, vendors, external parties are fully aware of industry, company and site safety processes and procedures; monitors the safety performance of contractor personnel and generates safety awareness in the contractor workforce

Leadership, People & Development

Demonstrates leadership with the highest professional and ethical standards ensuring all actions are transparent and in accordance with policies, standards, and values:

  • Mentors, develops, and sustains capability of the technical teams; plays an active role in building and sustaining technical and strategic capability within the teams
  • Creates opportunities for personnel to gain experience and for knowledge transfer, as part of a succession planning process for key technical roles
  • Communicates effectively to ensure all personnel understand relevant deliverables
  • Required to scope and manage specialist consultants in the delivery of aspects related to project studies

Budget, Cost & Governance

Contributes to & establishes effective budgeting, forecasting, cost management and analysis processes ensuring compliance with company financial and governance policies, procedures and reporting standards:

  • Ensures the project is delivered on time, as per technical specification and within budget
  • Prepares development and project budgets, and reports on performance and costs
  • Ensures cost management activities do not jeopardize medium- and long-term objectives
  • Ensures spending is consistently monitored to ensure costs are managed within the delegation of authorities and project budgets.

Scheduling & Planning

Demonstrates commitment to delivering on plans; ensures resources are aligned to plans:

  • Monitor self and technical team achievements against plans
  • Liaises with related stakeholders to support planning and activities
  • Monitors and tracks activities against schedule
  • Adheres to scheduled deliverables; Feasibility Study and project report writing and delivery
  • Develops project presentations as required through project delivery
  • Contractors, consultants, vendors
  • Project Managers
  • Project Leads and Superintendents
  • Red Chris Site Management Team
  • Community partners, including Tahltan Nation and Tahltan Central Government (TCG)
  • Newcrest Centre (Corporate/Group People Leadership Teams)

Qualifications & Experience:

Our ideal candidate will be a strong team-player with a dedication to safety & experience working in a remote camp setting. Additionally, we are looking for…

  • Post-graduate degree in a mining engineering field
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia or ability to transfer registration required
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of leadership experience in a large-scale operation
  • A minimum of 5 years in an underground mining operation
  • Strong project management skills developed over at least 15 years of practical and project experience
  • Knowledge and experience in the mining industry
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Prior experience in site layout development and integration considered an asset
  • Prior experience in material handling considered an asset
  • Prior experience in a process plant considered an asset
  • Prior experience in the application of multi-dimensional modelling considered an asset
  • Prior experience using the Aconex Document Management system and SAP considered an asset
  • Prior experience in compiling and reviewing drawings considered an asset

The successful candidate will have effective problem-solving skills with a results-orientated approach and excellent interpersonal & communication skills.
