The Project Engineer’s role is to support the Tailings Impounds Area (TIA) Technical and Construction Teams to ensure that all work is carried out in a safe, structured, agreed, and timely manner. This individual will ensure absolute compliance with legal requirement and company objectives to continuously improve their knowledge, skills, and relationship interactions. Identify, escalate, and manage impediments and developing issues to ensure delivery of work plans are achieved while enabling value and developing the leadership and technical competencies of the work teams to drive safety behaviours and attitudes.


Reporting to the Principal Engineer – Tailings Impoundment Area, duties will include but are not limited to:


Demonstrate technical and conceptual excellence in anticipating problems and supporting the team to deliver agreed departmental and business goals to ensure the value of the business is maintained or improved:

  • Supervising junior engineers (EIT’s), lab technicians, quality control technicians by allocating work and setting priorities
  • Reviewing MS3D designs, survey as-builts/volumes, instrumentation datasets, water management datasets
  • Assisting technical team in maintaining adequate designs for dumps, open borrow pits, quarry’s, impoundments, haul roads, slopes road constructions and stockpiles
  • Ensuring feedback on all works completed is recorded, including opportunities for improvement
  • Collaborating with contractors and consultants to set up work for execution and monitor and report on completion
  • Ensuring work is completed to the required design/quality and within the planned schedule
  • Supporting the development and operation of the TIA water balance and Water Management Plan
  • Attends, participates in mine planning meetings with preparation work for the TIA Department
  • Preparing CER’s, PEP’s and work scopes for dam construction related activities
  • Planning, coordination, and support of technical dam construction activities including direction and support to construction supervisors, consultants, and contractors
  • Completing weekly and month end reports, accruals, and tailings deposition summaries
  • Supporting Project Manager with schedules, cost estimates, budget, tender documents, equipment manpower forecasting and KPI tracking
  • Long term range planning including developing the 3-month rolling plan
  • Perform technical dam safety inspections and quarry/borrow pit inspections including all haul roads, slopes, and dumps
  • Assists the senior engineers in all geotechnical work related to the TIA including routine inspections, monitoring, testing, recording, evaluating, data collection and performance parameters of the TIA
  • Assists in maintaining documented procedures and important records and coordinates the development of controlled documents for tailings management related activities
  • Developing Trigger Action Response Plans
  • Participates in IERP Meetings including holding technical presentations
  • Ensures that all DSI recommendations from the past year are completed within schedule
  • Acts as the designate for the Senior Engineer and the TIA Principal Engineer
  • Preparing documentation to the ministry when required
  • Supporting the TIA OMS Manual update including the associated emergency preparedness and response plan and assists in the EPRP testing for the Red Chris TIA
  • Supporting tailings management related activities

  • Ensuring adequate pro-active monitoring to maintain a safe work environment
  • Instilling a culture of recognising hazards and minimising risk and consequential harm to employees
  • Supporting investigation when work is stopped due to an unsafe act or condition, ensuring actions to mitigate the risk are implemented
  • Taking a proactive risk management approach to departmental tasks, i.e., recognise, analyse, respond to ensure risks are at an acceptable level; ensuring that prior to work commencing an effective risk assessment and controls are in place and understood
  • Ensuring standard work procedures and safe systems of work are understood; enforcing compliance
  • Ensuring personnel are adequately trained to safely complete work requirements; verifying work instructions are clear
  • Ensuring compliance with the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia in accordance with section 10.1 to 10.6

Planning & Scheduling

Demonstrate commitment to delivering on departmental plans; ensuring resources are aligned to the plan:

  • Contributing to schedules and plans
  • Ensuring adequate resourcing for task requirements
  • Identifying and proposing improvement opportunities and projects that are to aligned business priorities, scoped, resourced, and executed
  • Assists in developing the Tailings Management System
  • Assists in short range tailings deposition planning, implementing, and tracking execution vs plan
  • Coordinates together with the TIA Principal Engineer on all Provincial and Federal permit and reporting requirements for compliancy

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Hold degree in Civil, Geotechnical or Geological Engineering or Applied Science
  • Registered or eligible to register for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC (desirable)
  • 5-10 years of professional experience working in tailings facility design and construction   
  • Experience in Tailings Storage Facility design and construction
  • Cyclone sand placement design
