Our Red Chris operation is now recruiting for the position of Manager - Underground Mining with a competitive base salary between $170,793.00 - $304,757.00 dependant on experience, skills, and qualifications. with an additional short term incentive of 30%. The offered base salary will be determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills and competencies with consideration to internal equity. 

We are seeking an individual for a Fly In, Fly Out opportunity working on a two weeks in, two weeks out rotation.  

 

Purpose of the Role

Responsible for the management of safety and ensuring all work in the Underground Mine for the Block Cave project is completed in accordance with the approved project schedule, cost and quality expectations. Manage an over $1B scope of mining and associated work whilst ensuring the safe integration of all other underground construction activities. Manage the safety and interactions of around 300 people UG on shift. Ensure the smooth hand over and establishment of ongoing production operations up to 15Mtpa.  This will be done utilizing the Newmont Project management Standards (PMS) and aligned with the investment approvals from Newmont, regulatory approvals from the British Columbia government and the Impact Benefit and Co-Management Agreement (IBCA) with the Tahltan.

Accountabilities

Technical

Demonstrates technical and conceptual excellence in anticipating problems and supports the team and plans, to deliver agreed Project, departmental and business goals to ensure the value of the business is maintained or improved:

  • Provides leadership to the project team on HSEC matters and ensures all employees and contractors carry out their duties and responsibilities as defined in the project HSEC execution plan
  • Develops and implements the project execution strategy
  • Ensures overall project scope of services and scope of work is performed in a safe, cost effective and timely manner
  • Leads, Coaches, Mentors and guides the team in mining disciplines covering Mining development, Cave establishment (drilling and blasting), Cave ramp up, operations (cave draw and Material Handling). Including all support technical groups such as Geology, Geotech, Survey, Maintenance and Engineering.
  • Oversees the management of contractors in the various mining delivery & construction areas.
  • Monitors and reviews all project delivery components including administration, document control, project control, staff planning, engineering, supply chain management, construction,  pre-commissioning, and operations
  • Manage the various mining and related contracts with estimated values in total exceeding $1B and employing over 500 people.
  • Oversees the development of all project ( and later operations) budgets, schedules and progress reports
  • Develops and manages project-specific change and risk management systems
  • Ensures project requirements for permits, licenses and regulatory agency approvals are met and up to date
  • Organizes and leads planning sessions, team building workshops and project coordination meetings, particularly with the interplay with UG construction
  • Ensures an appropriate review process is implemented for the project including project reviews, risk reviews, constructability and independent peer reviews
  • Provides regular updates to the Project Director ( and Site GM) in the form of reports and regular interaction
  • Provide updates of findings in the form of reports and presentations
  • Drives continuous improvement with a focus on value and cost reduction
  • Actively supports the interaction with the various design teams and Melbourne /regional based SME’s to promote learning and development , knowledge transfer, and building a robust mining & technical team
  • Demonstrates an applied understanding of Project Process and Standards (PMS & the Gold Book) and seeks cohesion of processes with Project and Study teams, the Site management team, and other key stakeholders
  • Ensure relationship and interactions with regulators is professional and positive

  • Ensures work is conducted using the appropriate risk assessment and risk management strategy in accordance with safety standards, frameworks and that behaviours are aligned to a culture of minimizing employee risk and harm
  • Evaluates and ensures all plans and activities are managed and implemented safely, consistent with practices to ensure absolute compliance to all regulations, laws, policies, procedures & standards; responsible for safety in design (Process safety) and safety in construction

  • Drives safety practices in multi-disciplinary teams by staying abreast of emerging safety standards and strives for alignment with advancements in the industry
  • Ensures all partners, vendors, external parties are fully aware of industry, company and site safety processes and procedures; monitors the safety performance of contractor personnel and generates safety awareness in the contractor workforce at each phase of the project

  • Monitors and tracks activities against schedule, develops and executes mitigation actions

  • Ensures “best for Newmont and best for project overall” decisions

Budget, Cost & Governance

Contributes to or establishes effective budgeting, forecasting, cost management and analysis processes ensuring compliance with company financial and governance policies, procedures and reporting standards:

  • Accountable for projects to be delivered on time, within budget, and as per specifications
  • Prepares budgets, reports and presentations on performance and costs
  • Ensures cost management activities do not jeopardize medium- and long-term objectives

About You  

Position requirements include, but are not limited to:   

Required and Desired Qualifications:

  • Post graduate Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years in a similar role with strong technical knowledge in delivering mining or large heavy industry projects
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of leadership experience in a large-scale operation
  • Demonstrated experience in delivery of large UG development projects
  • Block cave mining experience strongly preferred  (construction and operation)
  • Strong project management skills; proficient knowledge of working with budgets and driving schedules
  • Effective problem-solving skills with a results-oriented approach
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working in a diverse workforce
  • Experience working at a remote work site
