We are looking for a passionate and experienced Manager Employee Relations professional to join our Papua New Guinea team in a newly created role as the Director Employee Relations PNG for our Lihir operations.

Reporting to the Head of People PNG, this role is pivotal in cultivating and maintaining a positive and inclusive workplace culture. The successful candidate will lead a variety of initiatives and programs designed to enhance employee engagement, ensuring interactions are honest, respectful, equitable, and fair.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic Employee Relations Plans across the PNG and Australia regions, contributing directly to organizational governance.
  • Review and enhance policies and procedures to align with both business and legislative requirements, promoting fair and equitable employee relations and sound business decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with local legislation and Newmont’s global strategies in all PNG Employee Relations practices.
  • Provide expert guidance on ER legislation, offering leadership on workplace relations, early intervention strategies, and workforce trend analysis.
  • Support People Business Partners and operational leaders in resolving employee grievances, disputes, and conflicts promptly and impartially, leveraging your experience in managing investigations.
  • Collaborate with the Business Integrity & Compliance (BI&C) team to provide insights and guidance for leadership decisions based on investigation outcomes.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders to shape and implement the Business Unit’s employee relations strategy, driving a culture focused on psychosocial safety.
  • Represent Newmont in litigation proceedings, in partnership with internal or external legal counsel, including engagements with the PNG Labour Department, Industrial Relations, and the Fair Work Commission in Australia.
  • Advise the HR Manager on strategic engagement with the National Staff Forum at Lihir.
  • Apply commercial acumen to develop Employee Relations programs, contributing to budget planning, labor cost forecasting, and overall workforce management.

Your Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Advanced proficiency in developing and implementing programs that drive positive employee relations, supported by a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Employee Relations, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in managing investigations, handling performance issues, and resolving cases, disputes, and grievances.
  • Expertise in ER/IR practices, with strong skills in negotiating agreements with the National Staff Forum, facilitating workshops, and effectively communicating solutions.
  • Ability to provide consistent, high-quality advice on Employee Relations matters, coupled with a talent for coaching leaders on managing ER concerns.
  • Self-awareness and adaptability, with a proven ability to reflect on your own behaviors and their impact on others within a diverse workforce.
  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive climate where all team members feel valued, safe to contribute, collaborate, and receive constructive feedback.
  • Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and consultation skills, with a collaborative mindset and an ability to nurture and maintain positive working relationships.

This position is based in Newmont’s PNG Hub office located in Brisbane with a flexible work arrangement of in-person and remote work. You will be required to travel to our Lihir operations periodically as per requirement of the role.
